Recipe from Joanne Olsen
1½ lbs ground beef
1 tbls shortening
2 cup sliced onion
1 clove finely minced garlic
1 tbls flour
1½ tsp salt, divided
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp basil
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp pepper
¼ tsp oregano
2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
1 (4 oz) can sliced mushrooms un-drained
4 cups sliced raw potatoes (not too thin)
1 cup water
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cook beef in shortening until slightly browned. Add onion and garlic, cook until onion is tender. Stir in flour, 1 tsp salt, sugar, basil, cinnamon, pepper, and oregano; mix well. Add tomato sauce and mushrooms, stir. Simmer to thicken, about 15 minutes. Cook potatoes in water with remaining ½ tsp salt until partially cooked, about 10 minutes; drain. Layer half of the potatoes, meat sauce and cheese into shallow greased 2 quart baking dish. Repeat using remaining ingredients. Bake approx 30-35 minutes until potatoes are tender.
